For nearly ten years, 2008's Call of Duty: World at War was the final entry in the series to take place during World War II.Īfter Black Ops 3 and Infinite Warfare took the series further into futuristic science fiction territory than some fans would have liked, developer Sledgehammer Games brought the shooting series back to its roots with Call of Duty: WWII. Despite having a history with World War-based content, the series wouldn't truly explode in popularity until 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which took the series away from its World War II roots and into the present day. The latest title being offered to PlayStation Plus subscribers in June is Call of Duty: WWII.
